Canonicity and Social Canons in the Pre-Modern Levant

The making of symbolic hegemony – and the case of early Hebrew Scriptures

In this workshop we hope to start forming an apprehension of social canonization and canonicity in pre-modern Levantine cultures, and to explore – as a case study – what such an apprehension might contribute to the understanding of early Hebrew scriptural canonicity. For this purpose we suggest to explore the suitability of Pierre Bourdieu's theory. The idea is that his view of social validation will have a bearing for understanding globalising processes in general in the pre-modern Levant (and indeed beyond), and we do think that applying this perspective to early Hebrew canonization may yield learning for other LDG fields as well.

Among our invited contributors are Erwan Dianteill, Centre d’anthropologie culturelle, Université Paris Descartes-Sorbonne; Seth Sanders, Trinity College, Connecticut; Ehud Ben Zvi, Alberta; Christophe Nihan, Université de Lausanne. LDG organisers of the conference are Diana Edelman, and Terje Stordalen, who will also offer a presentation.
